What could be more exciting than going for a few days’ horse riding in a country where culture revolves around horses? Escape on a short drive out of the bustling capital city and into Mongolia’s famous grasslands where you will horse-trek through a scenic valley of the Tuul River. Also known as Queen Tuul, she is a vital source of freshwater for millions of humans and animals living near its banks. After four days of riding across lush meadows with views of forested mountains and pristine rivers, hop back in the car for a return drive to the city with a stopover at a mounted statue of Chinggis Khan, which is the world’s largest equestrian statue.

Day 1 Arrival in Mongolia

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, the bustling capital of Mongolia. Our representative will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to a centrally located hotel. After settling into your room, meet your guide in the lobby for a walking city tour to the main square and nearby museums. Then attend an evening show of traditional performances followed by a welcome dinner.

Day 2 Drive to start of horse-riding

In the morning, drive about 25 km to Gachuurt. Here we meet our herder and riding horses. After briefing about riding Mongolian horses, we will mount and ride towards the Tuul River. This 704 km river originates from the mountains of Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area and after flowing through this area, it passes through the southern part of the country’s capital and eventually joins the Orkhon River. Tonight is our first tented camping under thousands of stars.

Day 3 Horse-riding along the Tuul River

We will ride along the Tuul River and through its lush valley dotted with white, dome-shaped felt homes of nomadic families and their large herds of grazing animals. Mongolian nomads’ five main animals are: horses, camels, goats, sheep, and cattle (including cows and yaks).

Day 4 Continue riding in the Tuul Valley

Continue riding along the Tuul Valley. One of the days, we may visit a nomadic family and get a glimpse into their unique lifestyle which has remained nearly the same for hundreds of years. Your guide can tell you about the dos and don’ts of Mongolian nomads beforehand.

Day 5 Last day of riding

Today is the last day of horse riding. This evening, stay overnight at a tourist camp where you can get refreshed and relax. Tourist camps comprise rows of traditional felt tents serving as hotel rooms, a restaurant building, and a communal wash-room facility with running water.

Day 6 Return to Ulaanbaatar

Drive back to Ulaanbaatar with a stopover at 40 m (130 ft) tall, stainless-steel statue of Chinggis Khan on horseback, which is the world’s largest equestrian statue. Inside the statue complex, there is a small museum, souvenir shop, and a lift that takes you up to flights of stairs leading onto the top of the horse’s head where you can get a panoramic view of the surrounding environment. Upon arriving in Ulaanbaatar, check-in to the hotel and meet up later for farewell dinner.
